Chennai: Saint Sebastian Church of Madhavaram, one of the oldest churches in Chennai will celebrate its 800th anniversary of the Founding of Franciscan Order (Franciscan Congregation) on June 26.

As part of the function, a special Holy Mass will be conducted, presided over by Rev A M Chinnappa, Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore.

Giving details of the event, Father John, O F M, Parish Priest, said Saint Sebastian is the only church in Chennai that is celebrating the 800th anniversary of the formal founding of the Franciscan order.

The function is being organized by the people also to mark the culmination of one year of World Priest Day, a day of prayer for the sanctification of priests, as announced by Pope Benedict XVI.

The function is expected to attract participation by about 5000 people from across Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu. Cultural activities would also be oraganised in connection with the celebrations.

The church has been taking up many social, medical and youth awareness programmes. It has been striving for the betterment of society by contributing to spiritual growth, social harmony, promotion of primary, higher and vocational education, among others, he said.
