Rahul Gandhi turns 40, Cong observes 'Sankalp Diwas'

New Delhi/Amethi: Congress youth icon Rahul Gandhi's 40th birthday was today observed as 'Sankalp Diwas' by the Grand Old Party which vowed to emerge victorious in the next UP Assembly elections.
The main function of the Congress was held in Lucknow, Amethi and Rae Bareli, though other cities of Uttar Pradesh also organised several functions to commemorate the day.
Fruits and sweets were distributed among the poor to mark the occasion, while the party activists danced to the beats of drums to hail the birthday of their leader.
In Lucknow, UP Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi led a 'Rahul Sandesh Padyatra' from Nagar Nigam to Aminabad with the party observing the day as 'Sankalp Diwas' for preparing itself for the 2012 assembly polls.
The Congress had decided to observe the day as 'Sankalp Diwas' and vowed to emerge victorious in the UP Assembly elections.
With the slogan ''Ek ho, Congress lao, Pradesh bachao', the party would apprise the people of its success and achievements, announced Ms Joshi announced before launching the padyatra.
Similarly, Rahul Sandesh padyatras were taken out in almost all the cities of the state.
In Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of Rahul Gandhi, the party workers and leaders celebrated the day with much fanfare. The party workers distributed fruits to the poor, while in some places the youth Congress workers were also seen cutting cakes. On the occasion, the Indira Gandhi Eye Hospital and Research Centre, which was established under the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust, inaugurated its first 'Vision Centre' at Rae Bareli, the parliamentary constituency of Ms Sonia Gandhi.
Indian cricketer R P Singh, who also hails from Rae Bareli, inaugurated the vision centre to provide comprehensive primary eye care services to the rural population.
