Mumbai: The Bombay High Court today began dictating its order on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), challenging the Maharashtra Government's Best of 5 criteria for class XI admissions but it continues stay on the admission process.

A Division bench, consisting Justices J N Patel and S C Dharamadhkri, began dictating the order after arguments from the petitioner and respondents concluded.

Though the court has begun the dictation of the order, it made it clear that the ongoing stay on the admission process in junior colleges will continue till the court delivers its final verdict.

While justifying its stand on the Best of 5 criteria, the state government said the scheme was introduced in the interest of the students and before its introduction objections from the parents and students were invited. In response to this, 250 people came before the state out of which 189 agreed to it, while only 59 opposed it.

The Court had, earlier, asked the government not to start the admission process for Class XI without its permission, while hearing a bunch of petitions filed by the students and the parents, challenging the state's ''Nest of 5 scheme'.

The state had, in February this year, issued a government resolution (GR), stating that the marks obtained in any five subjects out of six in the SSC class X examination would be taken into account for class XI admission. SSC students will, therefore, be able to choose five subjects, in which he or she has good marks.

This is the third consecutive year in which the government finds itself at the centre of a controversy over class XI admissions.
