Makkah: The General Presidency for the Affairs of Makkah Haram, the Grand Mosque in Makkah, and Masjid e Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, on Thursday inaugurated advanced self-sterilization gates.
The new gates are equipped with the latest technologies, as part of the precautionary measures that have been activated since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The advanced gates, to be used for sterilizing people with sanitizer spray, are also equipped with thermal cameras to test temperatures from six-meter distance and a smart screen for speed reading of temperatures of several people at the same time.
All workers at the Makkah Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah will be required to pass through the gates before entering the buildings, while the systems themselves will be sterilized periodically.
This comes within the preventive and precautionary measures that were taken by the General Presidency to combat COVID-19.
Entry to the two holy mosques has been restricted for masses ever since the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) outbreak in the Kingdom in February.
Umrah during Ramadan is also suspended this year because of the novel virus epidemic. Five daily prayers and Taraweeh - the hallmark of Ramadan, have also been allowed only for handful people comprising administration and staff of the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah.
Saudi Arabia has recorded 239 deaths and over 37,000 Coronavrus positive cases till Saturday May 7. As many as 10,144 people have recovered and sent home.
Makkah and Madinah - the two holy cities of the Muslim World, are among worst hit by Covid-19 in Saudi Arabia.
