Mirwaiz Umer condemns efforts to trigger sectarian strife

Srinagar: Ulema of different schools of thought on Saturday resolved to stand up together against the conspiracies to whip up Maslaki hatred among Muslims in the Valley.

Speaking at a seminar organized here to discuss measures to combat the growing menace of Maslaki hatred in the Valley, Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani said, “Unity among the Muslims is the need of the hour.”

He appealed Ulema of all schools of thought to ignore the differences on the issues of secondary importance in the larger interest of the community and be united under one banner to strengthen the matters of religious and national importance.

He said conspiracies were being hatched to whip up Maslaki enmity among the Muslims in Kashmir, “Differences can be there but Muslims have one Allah, one prophet (SAW), one Quran and one Qibla and these provide them sufficient and strong foundations to forge unity among themselves and work out a joint strategy to fight their common enemy,” he said, adding that “Unity is the strongest tool to fight Maslaki hatred.”

Geelani stressed the need to impart religious and moral education in the schools. He said the well off people should open schools where besides worldly education the children are given religious and moral education.

Besides both the factions of Hurriyat, Ulema from Jamait-e-Ahlihadis, Karawan-i-Islami, Jama’at Islami Jammu Kashmir, Anjuman-e-Ulema-e-Ahnaf, Millat-i-Islamia, Anjuman Tableeg-ul-Islam and other Islamic organizations participated in the seminar.

Earlier, in his introductory speech, the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat general secretary Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai briefly apprised the participants about the aims and objectives of the seminar.

He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir are struggling for a cause for the past over 60 years. “We need to forge unity and foil all the conspiracies and attempts aimed at dividing us in the name of Maslaks", he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Amir Jama’at-e-Islami Sheikh Muhammad Hassan said unity alone could counter effectively all the internal and external conspiracies.

Moulana Muhammad Khursheed Kanoongo clarified that the Ulema had an important role to play.

Moulana Ghulam Rasool Hami announced that Ulema Ahli Sunnat would join their voice with the voice of Syed Ali Shah Geelani in his efforts for unity. He said the Muslims of the state are being divided under a well thought out conspiracy.

Dr Moulana Qazi Yasir while speaking on the occasion said, “We have always been for unity and we are ready to offer any sacrifice.”

Moulana Rehmat Ullah Qasmi said to foil the attempts of vested interests to divide Muslims and create confusion among them in the name of Maslaks, the Ulema should sit together and work out a joint strategy.

“They can provide proper guidance to the people and dissuade them from fighting with each other in the name of Maslaks,” he said.

The senior leader of Awami Action Committee Syed-ur-Rehman Shams assured full support of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to forge unity.

Abdul Rehman Bhat of Jamiat-e-Ahlihadis stressed the need for unity to scuttle the conspiracies to divide Muslims.

Moulana Abdul Rashid Dawoodi called upon the Ulema to desist from issuing Fatwas against one another. “These Fatwas can only lead us to disunity and enmity,” he said.

Moulana Altaf Ahmad Nadwi, Moulana Syed Ali Akbar, Dr Yousuf-ul-Umar and Sabat Muhammad Shabir Qumi also spoke on the occasion.
