Mumbai: Eminent space
scientist and astronomer Jayant Narlikar has been named as the
recipient of the prestigious Maharashtra Bhushan 2010, an official
said Monday.
The award, which consists of Rs.500,000 cash and a citation, is in
recognition for Narlikar's over four decades of research in the
field of astronomy and space.
Narlikar's name was announced following a high-level meeting
chaired by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and attended by Deputy
Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Culture Minister Sanjay Devtale, the
selection committee members, Justice (retd) C. Dharmadhikari,
former cricketer Ajit Wadekar and other officials here Monday
afternoon.
The previous recipients of the honour include: litterateur P.L.
Deshpande, singer Lata Mangeshkar, cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and
Sachin Tendulkar, scientists Vijay Bhatkar and R. Mashelkar,
classical singer Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, social activists Abhay and
Rani Bang and Baba Amte, business magnate Ratan Tata, Gandhian R.K.
Patil, poet Mangesh Padgaonkar, spiritual leader Nanasaheb
Dharmadhikari and veteran actress Sulochana.
Narlikar has been conferred the UNESCO Kalinga Award, the Padma
Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, besides several other national and
international awards.
The Maharashtra Bhushan award was instituted by the state
government in 1997 to recognize exceptional talent in various
spheres of life.
