New Delhi:
Acting on complaints by politicians and the civil society, the
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday said it will
investigate an alleged incident of police firing in Bihar earlier
this month in which four people were killed.
The decision came after politicians like Communist Party of
India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP)
chief Ram Vilas Paswan and human rights activist Mohan Lal Panda
met NHRC chairperson K.G. Balakrishnan, asking for action in the
matter, a statement by the rights' panel said.
Shabnam Hashmi of the NGO, SAHMAT, also led a delegation to meet
Balakrishnan on the matter.
"The NHRC today (Monday) asked its director general
(Investigation) to depute a team for conducting an on-the-spot
inquiry into an alleged incident of firing by police and killing
of four persons in village Bhajanpura in the Araria district in
Bihar on June 3, 2011," the statement said.
"Those killed included a pregnant woman and a 10-month-old child.
Allegedly, after shooting down the persons, the policemen also
kicked one of them with boots crushing him to death finally," it
added.
