Dead Sea in Jordan is a hot tourist spot
Kochi: Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) is expecting a quantum jump in the number of Indian tourists visiting Jordan as close to 50,000 Indian tourists are expected to visit that country in 2010.
Addressing a press conference here today, Indian Representative in the Board, Ashish Sharma said, ''We are expecting close to 50,000 Indian tourists to visit Jordan, which would be more than 90 per cent growth compared to last year's 29,000 tourists.''
Due to the economic recession, the tourist arrivals from India, took a dip in 2009 from 38,000 Indian tourists in 2008, Sharma added.
He said in the first five months of this fiscal, more than 20,000 Indian tourists have already visited Jordan.
In an effort to increase the marketing efforts in India, the Board had organized road shows in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi, Bangalore, Goa and Mumbai.
JTB also highlighted the various hot spots visited by global tourists in 2009 2010 that include the historical ruins of the city of Petra, Jerash, Karak, Mount Nebo, Madaba and the Dead Sea.
JTB Marketing Manager for Asia, Meher Salman said more than 3.5 million tourists had visited Jordan in 2009 and nearly 14 per cent of the GDP came from the tourism sector.
JTB was officially launched in March 1998 as an independent, public-private sector partnership committed to utilize marketing strategies to brand, position and promote the Jordan tourism product as the destination of choice in the international markets.
