Bhopal:
Maharashtra athletes mauled opposition to emerge overall champions
in the 22nd National West Zone Junior Athletics Championship which
concluded here in Bhopal at the Tatya Tope Stadium on Friday.
Maharashtra athletes virtually lorded over their rivals in the
three-day competitions as they garnered whopping 97 gold, 64 silver
and 36 bronze medals to have a total of 197 medals, just three short
of 200 mark, to their credit.
Hosts Madhya Pradesh finished runners-up with a total of 77 medals
in their kitty which included 15 gold, 32 silver and 30 bronze
medals. Chhattisgarh were placed third in the championship with 4
gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze amounting to total 21 medals.
Maharashtra out of eight groups captured the Best Athlete title in
seven with the exception of Boys U-14 category which went to Raj
Kishore of Madhya Pradesh.
The seven Best Athlete titles which
Maharashtra athletes won included: Boys: U-16: Anurag Khoparkar;
U-18: Prateek Ninave; Jr. men 20: Dattatray Jodge; Girls: U-14
Julie; U-16 Urvi Tembey; U-18 Jui Dadarkar and Jr. Women Shradha
Ghule.
Madhya Pradesh Minister for Local-Self Government & Gas relief was
the chief guest and Mahesh Joshi, the nominated vice president of
Indian Olympic Association, presided over the closing ceremony.
Prahlad Sawant, secretary Maharashtra Athletics Association, was
also present during the closing ceremony function.
About six hundred junior athletes from six Indian states namely
Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and hosts Madhya
Pradesh participated in the championship.
