Rarely does it happen when a person with a good-writing skill possesses an excellent oratory skill also. But when it happens, that person stands clearly distinguished from others. Shameem Tarique - renowned poet, critic, research scholar, humanist, journalist and columnist, is certainly one of them in the country. He was in Malegaon for a daylong visit as a keynote-speaker in a seminar.
Speaking exclusively with Nashik Times, Shameem Tarique proudly said, “When President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abul Kalam started working on Indian missile technology, despite his talent, he was not prominently known in the country. I am proud of myself that I wrote about Dr. Kalam in my column in Blitz before anyone could do it in the media.” He was referring to his popular column in Blitz, Sitara Jo Aaftab Ban Gaya, star that turned into sun.
Basically a poet belonging to Sufi thoughts, as a journalist, he has worked in various capacities with several news publications. With Urdu Blitz, he had worked as Deputy Editor from 1983 till 1996 when Blitz finally died.
Besides writing weekly columns in leading national and regional news publications, he is working as a Research Fellow at Anjuman-e-Islam Research Institute in Mumbai. In June 2006, Ministry of Culture & Tourism had given him a fellowship to research on Sufi-Kalam, to find out how many times Sufis had used the word “Shri Krishna” in their poetry.
He has written several books on various topics including a book on Sufis, titled as “Sufiya ka Bhagti Raag”. In reply to a question he said, “The problem with us is that we are searching for farishte, angels, among ourselves to follow. But the fact is that human being is prone to errors and mistakes.” Quoting from Sufis, Saaf Lailo aur Maila Chod Do, he wondered, “why don’t we grab what is good in a person ignoring what is not good?”
The most sought-after personality by all and sundry, he is like an itinerant cache of knowledge. Referred to as Mahir-e-Iqbaliyat, an expert of the Great Eastern Poet, Allama Iqbal, he speaks convincingly on any topic, decorating his speech with relevant and asserting citations and couplets. His critics and admirers both will at least agree that listening to him always gave a wonderful experience.
In his keynote speech earlier in the day at the seminar organized by Urdu fortnightly, Akhbar-e-Aslaf on completing five years, he said, “The duty of a journalist is to portray plain truth.” Asserting that media plays a vital role in building a good and honored society, he advised the journalists to keep the impact of their reports on a society in mind before reporting anything.
