2024 Elections: UK set for all time high number of Muslim MPs

2024 UK Elections: As the British nationals vote for the 2024 General Elections, reports from ground, and the latest survey reports and projections suggest that the new Parliament in the United Kingdom will have all time high number of Muslim MPs.

The United Kingdom comprising of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland has a total of 650 constituencies represented by as many Member of Parliaments.

The population of Muslims in the United Kingdom is around 3.9 million which comes to around 6.5% of the total population of the country having some 49 million registered voters.

Voting began in UK to elect the new parliament at 07:00 AM Thursday July 04, 2024. Registered voters will continue to cast their votes till 10:00 PM.

Soon after the polling, counting of votes will begin with trends and result likely to start coming by 11:30 PM. The results of all the 650 seats are expected to be announced by 08:00 AM Friday morning.

List of Muslim MPs in UK

In 2019, a total of 19 Muslims had won the UK National Elections. The number of

Muslim MPs in 2019 was 04 more than the UK elections held in 2017.

A total of 300 Muslims – British origin and of different origins and ethnicities, are contesting the 2024 Parliament Elections in UK.

Among them is also Yvonne Ridley, the prominent Muslim who embraced Islam after spending time in Taliban captivity, contesting the 2024 UK elections from Newcastle Central and West constituency as Independent candidate.

According to the YouGov polling conducted from June 11 to 18, 2024, following 16 Muslim candidates - sitting as well as former MPs, are likely to win their seats.

  1. Apsana Begum (Labour Party) Poplar & Limehouse, 49%-win margin. Elected 2019.
  2. Rosena Allin-Khan (Labour Party) Tooting, 49%-win margin. Elected 2016.
  3. Khalid Mahmood (Labour Party) Birmingham Perry Barr, 44%-win margin. Elected 2001.
  4. Imran Hussain (Labour Party) Bradford East, 43%-win margin. Elected 2015.
  5. Rupa Huq (Labour Party) Ealing Central & Acton, 41%-win margin. Elected 2015.
  6. Shabana Mahmood (Labour Party) Birmingham Ladywood, 39%-win margin. Elected 2010.
  7. Abtisam Mohamed (Labour Party) Sheffield Central, 39%-win margin. Replacing retiring MP
  8. Yasmin Qureshi (Labour Party) Bolton South & Walkden, 38%-win margin. Elected 2010.
  9. Feryal Clark (Labour Party) Enfield North, hold 38%-win margin. Elected 2019.
  10. Tulip Siddiq (Labour Party) Hampstead & Highgate, 37%-win margin. Elected 2015.
  11. Rushanara Ali (Labour Party) Bethnal Green & Stepney, 32%-win margin. Elected 2010.
  12. Naz Shah (Labour Party) Bradford West, 32%-win margin. Elected 2015.
  13. Mohammad Yasin (Labour Party) Bedford, 31%-win margin. Elected 2017.
  14. Tahir Ali (Labour Party) Birmingham Hall Green & Moseley, 28%-win margin. Elected 2019.
  15. Zarah Sultana (Labour Party) Coventry South, 30%-win margin. Elected 2019.
  16. Afzal Khan (Labour Party) Manchester Rusholme, 27%-win margin. Elected 2017.

According to the YouGov as well as other pollsters and their projections, following 04 Muslim candidates, mostly new, could win today’s elections with reasonable margins.

  1. Heather Iqbal (Labour Party) Dewsbury & Batley, 5%-win margin.
  2. Zubir Ahmed (Labour Party) Glasgow Southwest, 14%-win margin.
  3. Nus Ghani (Conservative) Sussex Weald, 1%-win margin. Elected 2015.
  4. Sadik Al-Hassan (Labour Party) North Somerset, 9%-win margin.

The following candidates are likely to win with small margins depending on the voters’ turnout and the last-minute decisions:

  1. Saqib Bhatti (Conservative) Meriden & Solihull East (Con win vs. Lab: 3%-win margin). Elected 2010.
  2. Najmul Hussain (Labour Party) Brigg & Immingham (Con win vs Lab: 3%-win margin).
  3. Rufia Ashraf (Labour Party) South Northamptonshire (Con win vs. Lab: 3%-win margin).
  4. Zafran Khan (Labour Party) Melton & Syston (Lab win vs. Con: 2%-win margin).
  5. Sajid Ahmad (Labour Party), Newark (Lab win vs. Con: 2%-win margin).
  6. Yousef Dahmash (Conservative) Rugby (Lab win vs. Con: 1%-win margin).
  7. Maahwish Mirza (Labour Party) Mid Bedfordshire (Lab win vs. Con: 1%-win margin).
  8. Hajira H Piranie (Labour Party) Harborough, Oadby & Wigston (Lab win vs. Con: 0%-win margin)

Besides expectedly sending the all high time Muslim MPs this elections, British Muslim voters could play crucial role in around 100 constituencies including majority of swing seats.

According to the latest survey, the Labour Party is set to form a new government in UK, ending the 14-year rule of the Conservative Party currently led by Rishi Sunak.
