New Delhi: The government of India informed the Supreme Court of India Thursday that it has decided to cancel the CBSE Class 12th and Class 10th exams scheduled to start on July 1, 2020 due to Coronavirus epidemic.
"Class 12th and 10th CBSE exams have been cancelled", Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told SC during the hearing of a petition.
The CBSE was supposed to conduct the Class 10 exams for Northeast Delhi students while Class 12th exams were supposed to be held all across India.
Class 10 and 12 both the exams were postponed and rescheduled due to Cororonavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The decision was announced during the hearing in the apex court on the petition filed by a group of parents seeking cancellation of Class 12th exams 2020 due to corona fear.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia has also said holding the exams under the present Corona situation was impossible.
"The board exams, especially for Class 12th, are a high stakes exam for students. Hence, subjecting them to take this exam in such an uncertain and anxiety-prone situation would not be fair to them,” Manish Sisodia said in a letter written to HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal.
Manish Sisodia also said that school and college premises are being used for various other purposes to contain the spread of novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). "Against this backdrop, it will be next to impossible to use these premises as exam centres", he said.
Last Wednesday during the hearing on a petition filed by the parents, the Supreme Court of India asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to consider the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic situation and revert by next week.
Criticizing the CBSE decision on the schedule of the examination, the petitioners argued that it demonstrated the extent of a discriminatory and arbitrary conduct of the CBSE in issuing the notification for holding the remaining examination and that too in July, wherein as per the AIIMS data, the COVID-19 pandemic would be at its peak.
