Hyderabad: Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday said that the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) would contest the 2017 assembly elections in the Congress-ruled Karnataka.
Owaisi made this announcement after a meeting with the party's Karnataka unit in Hyderabad.
Owaisi criticised the ruling Congress in Karnataka for allegedly not allowing him to address public meetings in the state.
"There is no difference between BJP and Congress. Congress speaks about freedom of expression. But, there is no freedom of expression in the Congress-ruled states. They are not allowing me to address a public meeting in Karnataka," Owaisi said, according to PTI.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) had earlier contested the Bengaluru civic elections held in August 2015, but could none of its candidates could win the election.
The Hyderabad based party AIMIM had earlier contested state elections in Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. However, except winning 02 seats in Maharashtra, it could not win a single seat in the other two states.
The AIMIM had first time contested election outside Hyderabad in 2012 Nanded civic elections and won 11 seats. However, it could not win a single seat in the 2017 Nanded civic polls.
Elections in Karnataka, which has a 224-member assembly, are likely to be held in the first half of 2018.
