Aligarh: The India Today Best Universities survey has ranked Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) as the third best Indian University in their recently released University rankings in the latest edition of India Today Magazine.
AMU stands third after Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University, which are first and second respectively. Kolkatta University and Hyderabad University follow AMU in the rankings.
AMU was ranked from a list of 500 universities, based on secondary data sources, such as the Internet, published reports and the Association of Indian Universities Handbook, and suggestions from experts.
The India Today magazine has stated that between February and March this year, around 600 experts across the country were asked to rank these universities. “The experts included deans, registrars, department heads, professors and readers, who were not allowed to rate their own universities,” confirmed India Today’s website.
While expressing happiness on the University’s rank, AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor has said that AMU is a centre of excellence and the recently released India Today rankings have testified AMU’s position as a top-notch institute of higher learning in the country.
India Today Best Universities survey, conducted by the Nielsen Company, has examined the country's universities in four streams, general (arts, science and commerce), technical, medical and legal. Universities that offer postgraduate courses in these streams were considered.
Institutions of national importance specialising in only one area of knowledge, such as engineering, medicine and law, have also been included in the survey.
