Srinagar: Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi, an erstwhile president of the Socialist Democratic Party, who contested the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir elections as the BJP candidate from the Sonawar assembly seat against chief minister Omar Abdullah miserably failed in impressing the voters and lost the election to the PDP candidate.
Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah both lost the election to Altaf Bukhari of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
While Omar secured 7,929 votes, Darakshan Andrabi could get just 835 votes as against their rival and PDP's lesser known candidate Mohammad Ashraf Mir who got a decisive 12,207 votes.
Andrabi, 38, is a seasoned "peace activist", and a writer and poet. Her last book, a Kashmiri translation of Pablo Neruda's poems, was released by then prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh in New Delhi.
During the poll campaigns, she had said, had got the blessings of BJP stalwarts such as ministers Rajnath Singh and Dr Jitendra Singh, and also been appointed one of the spokespersons for J&K by the party.
"I am being listed as one of the star campaigners for the Srinagar sector and since I am the spokesperson also, I am being called for many candidates in the valley for their campaign," she had said.
Along with Dr Hina Bhatt, Andrabi ran a high-pitch campaign for the BJP. The BJP was also hopeful that both of its woman candidate will win the election. However, like Andrabi, Hina Bhatt too lost the election.
On the other hand, the BJP as a whole has stunned the pollsters by its spectacular wins in as many as 25 seats in the state.
