Jamiat promote 'terrorism' in the country, collects huge donations to fight legal battles of 'terrorists', Mumbai MLA says in Maharashtra assembly
Nagpur: In an outrageous statement made in the Maharashtra assembly Thurdsay Ashish Shelar, the BJP MLA from Bandra (West) said the Jamiat-e-Ulema is promoting 'terrorism' in the country and there is a need to ban this organisation.
"The Jamiat-e-Ulema collects huge donations to fight the cases of people arrested in terror related cases. It promotes terrorism in the country. It should be banned without further delay", Shelar said in the Maharashtra assembly's winter session.
Participating in the debate on the law and order situation, Shelar also said that the Maharashtra Jamiat-e-Ulema is not a registered body, and alleged that its president Gulzar Azmi and his 'brother' Mustaqeem Azmi have links with Chhota Shakeel gang.
"These are serious charges, and there is an urgent need to probe them. If found necessary, the Jamiat-e-Ulema should be banned", he said.
Formed before independence, Jamiat-e-Ulema is a respected body of Indian Muslims. The BJP MLAs outrageous statement was vehemently condemned by the Congress, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and Samajwadi Party MLAs in the house.
"India's first education minister and one of the leading figures in the country's freedom struggle Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was president of the Jamia-e-Ulema. The country's top leaders including Mahatma Gandhi have graced the Jamiat-e-Ulema sessions. Defamatory remarks against such an organisation are unacceptable", Asif Shaikh Rasheed, Congress MLA from Malegaon (Central) assembly seat, said in the house.
Asif Shaikh also said that the Jamiat only helped those who are implicated in 'false' terror cases. He also said the Jamiat with the help of donations it collects, helps the victims affected by natural calamities.
He demanded apology from the BJP MLA and also from Chief Minister Fadnavis for the outrageous remarks.
Meanwhile, the Jamiat-e-Ulema have also condemned Shelar's allegations and said the Jamiat has helped victims irrespective of their religion.
"Along with Muslims, the Jamiat has helped some Hindu accused also who were framed in wrong cases", Jamiat legal advisor Shahid Nadeem Ansari said while talking to ummid.com.
He also said Gulzar Azmi is the Secretary of the Jamiat-e-Ulema Legal Cell whereas Mustaqueem Azmi is its president. The two are not brothers as claimed by Shelar.
"They have no link with Chhota Shakeel or his gang. They are also not brothers", he said.
He also said 30% of the Jamiat's Education Aid goes to Hindus.
He also said that the Jamiat is not providing any legal aid to Abu Jindal, the accused in the 26/11 terror case, as claimed by Shelar.
"Shelar's allegations are bundle of lies. It can be verified from the court documents that the Jamiat has not provided any legal to Jindal", he said.
