Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Monday assured a Muslim delegation meeting him at his official residence a smooth and hurdle-free Eid al-Adha celebration but failed to commit anything concrete on temporary slaughter houses.
"Eid al-Adha is the occasion of brotherhood and sacrifice. The Muslim brethrens should feel free and safe while observing their religious rituals", he said the Muslim leaders simultaneously directing the top police officers present in the meeting that no-one should unnecessary harass people carrying sacrificial cattle.
The Muslim leaders called on Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan after complaints were received from various places in Mumbai that police personnel and activists belonging to Hindutva communal forces were harassing the people carrying sacrificial cattle purchased for Eid al-Adha.
The Muslim leaders also demanded from the chief minister to setup temporary slaughter houses in Muslim dominated areas of Mumbai for at least three days of Eid al-Adha. The demand is raised as the Deonar Slaughter House is not only insufficient to handle the rush but it is also inconvenient for people living in far-away places.
Though the chief minister did commit anything concrete on temporary slaughter houses, he promised that the government will complete the renovation and modernistation of Deonar slaughter house as early as possible.
Every year ahead of Eid al-Adha complaints are lodged with the government from different parts of state that not only activists belonging to communal forces but police personnel are also involved in harassing the Muslims carrying sacrificial cattle, and sometime even forcibly seizing them. But, seldom suitable action is taken against them.
Incidentally, Muslims of Mumbai are demanding temporary slaughter houses for the past few years. But, the state is not ready to heed to their demand. Forced by the government inaction, Shamsher Khan Pathan, president of Avami vikas, has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court last year. The case is yet to come on board for hearing.
