Mumbai: Maharashtra Minorities Commission Chairman Munaf Hakim on Monday wrote a letter to the Pune Police Commissioner asking him for the details pertaining to the alleged humiliation and insult meted out to Shoeb Hashmi – an ETV Urdu reporter, by the Pune policemen.
Terming the incident unacceptable and unconstitutional, Hakim directed the Pune Police Commissioner to take action against the guilty policemen and send him an action taken report.
In his letter, Hakim expressed unhappiness over the entire incident and wondered why the reporter was stopped from his duties when the issue was already been in news and was reported by others.
Shoeb Hashmi, a reporter from Sholapur, was in Pune on Saturday when he was harassed, humiliated, insulted and made to sit in a police station for more than two hours. Refusing to believe his IDs and ignoring a directive from Additional Police Commissioner, Pune Abdur Rehman, the policemen told him such fake IDs were freely available and could be used by terrorists who they suspected were also taking shelter in mosques.
Hashmi was in Pune to do a report for ETV-Urdu, a TV channel part of the CNN-IBN Network, about the mosques affected by Pune's development plan. The issue is in news since last fortnight and is being widely covered by other media groups and newspapers.
Some 23 mosques in Pune are being affected by the civic body's road widening plan. While some of the mosque trustees are resisting the move, few have already given their nod and handed over part of the mosque land for the purpose.
