Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiv Sena are fighting for the top position in Ahmednagar Municpal Corporation Election where counting of votes began today morning amid tight security.
Trends obtained by 02:00 pm showed that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is leading on 18 seats whereas its rival Shiv-Sena is ahead on 17 seats. Congress is ahead on 11 seats, BJP on 09, Maharashtra Navnriman Sena (MNS) on 04 and inependents are leading on 09 seats.
Earlier Ahmednagar recorded seventy three percent voter turnout on Sunday to elect the new body of the 68-member municipal corporation.
"Voting in Ahmednagar which began today morning at 07:30 was totally peaceful. A record 73% people cast their votes to elect the new body of the 68-member municipal corporation", Election Officer SB Tadvi said while talking to ummid.com.
He said that as compared to the last time, the voting percentage saw a record increase.
"Last time's polling percentage was 62. So, this time we see an increase of 11% in the polling percentage", he said.
He said elections were held on Sunday for 67 seats of the 34 wards.
He also said that the election on one seat was cancelled after a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate was elected unopposed.
A total of 369 candidates belonging to various parties including the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Shiv Sena, Bhartia Janata Party (BJP) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) contested the elections. Fifty percent of the total seats was reserved for women candidates.
